AI Channels to Follow - KDnuggets
As the world continues to fight the novel coronavirus, every section of the society is playing its role. Medical professionals, law enforcement officers, and essential workers are on the frontline of this battle, while researchers, data scientists, and community leaders are also doing their part. There has been a recent increased emphasis on how AI can boost humanity's efforts in this on-going crisis. Experts believe Artificial Intelligence can analyze published literature on the disease, study structure and DNA of the virus, and recommend existing drugs or find a new one (in the latter case, it would take almost two years for the drug to be approved by the FDA). There has also been a discussion on how AI can help governments be smart about social distancing policies.
5 must read resources on artificial intelligence for doctors
We marvel at so many wonders of modern medicine, yet our industry is cuffed to clipboards and fax machines, regularly and doggedly antiquated. The promise of artificial intelligence (AI) is its potential to release physicians from tasks better performed by automation. Here we present a current scan of the ways AI is impacting primary health care and its key stakeholders. One thing that's clear to us -- for better or worse, AI is already impacting the medical profession and that quake is set to grow exponentially. The World Medical Association calls it a pandemic of physician burnout, and says it's time to take an innovative look to the future to help both physicians and patients prepare for the onslaught of changes in health care.
Ricardo Pereira on LinkedIn: "Great infographic from The Medical Futurist, on the FDA approvals of AI in medicine! If you're as lost as I was with so much going on in this field, this will certainly help you get your bearings straight! #digitalhealth #artificialintelligence"
This infographic, FDA approvals for artificial intelligence-based algorithms in medicine, was designed and created by The Medical Futurist to give a clear picture about the state of A.I. in medicine and healthcare with an emphasis on FDA regulations. As I couldn't find a reliable and constantly updated database of every FDA approval for artificial intelligence-based algorithms, I decided to scan through a lot of peer-reviewed papers and FDA documents to create one so you don't have to. The infographic also contains what medical specialties the algorithms are associated with (sometimes more than one), when it was approved and what its function is. If you find any inaccuracies or you think I missed one, please do let me know so we can update the infographic.

5 Reasons Why A.I. Will Not Replace Physicians - The Medical Futurist
There's hype and fear surround A.I. in healthcare. For example: looking at the rapid advancement of medical imaging it could seem like human radiologists will be obsolete in the future as A.I. will take care of their tasks. But it's fearmongering and it's irresponsible, especially if investors do that. Let me tell you five things why that A.I. won't replace physicians.

5 Reasons Why Artificial Intelligence Won't Replace Physicians - The Medical Futurist
At the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, automation and digitization are turning the job market upside down. Many fear that robots, A.I., and automation, in general, will take their jobs without alternatives. The same anxieties emerged in healthcare about artificial intelligence taking the place of radiologists, robots surpassing the skills of surgeons, or taking jobs in pharma. A renowned voice in tech, Kai-Fu Lee, founder of venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures told CNBC that A.I. will be bigger than all other tech revolutions, and robots are likely to replace 50 percent of all jobs in the next decade. Silicon Valley-investor Vinod Khosla even said that machines will substitute 80 percent of doctors in the future in a healthcare scene driven by entrepreneurs, not medical professionals.

Technologies Change Health Insurance: The Most Innovative Ventures - The Medical Futurist
According to OECD predictions, exceeding budgets on health spending remains an issue for OECD countries. Maintaining today's healthcare systems and funding future medical advances will be difficult without major reforms. Public expenditure on health and long-term care in OECD countries is set to increase from around 6 percent of GDP today to almost 9 percent in 2030 and 14 percent by 2060. Moreover, in 2011 a study of the World Economic Forum estimated that the global economic impact of the five leading chronic diseases -- cancer, diabetes, mental illness, heart disease, and respiratory disease -- could reach $47 trillion over the next 20 years. The estimated cumulative output loss caused by the illnesses, which together already kill more than 36 million people a year and are predicted to kill tens of millions more in the future, represents around 4 percent of annual global GDP over the coming two decades, the study said.
